If you’re looking to improve your health, one of the things that you should do is to add cucumbers to your diet. Cucumbers are among the best foods for your body’s overall health and yet a lot of people overlook their nutritional value.

They often referred to as a superfood.

Cucumbers Helps Treat Cancer:

Cucumbers are loaded with phytonutrients called cucurbitacins, which are known for their anti-cancer benefits. In fact, a 2013 research paper entitled “Cucurbitacins — A Promising Target for Cancer Therapy” found that cucurbitacins exhibited antitumor activity in human cancer cell lines.

Additionally, cucumbers contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. These three lignans have been found to reduce risk of different cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer. For example, a study published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases in 2010 discovered that these constitutes might “lower vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which could have some implications in CVD prevention.”Another study published in Nutrition and Cancer also found that pinoresinol could suppress the growth of human leukemia cells.

Cucumbers Help Treat Inflammation:

Cucumbers are high in four flavonoids called quercetin, apigenin, kaempferol and luteolin. According to a study published in Inflammation Research, flavonoids exhibit anti-inflammatory properties due to “antioxidant activity, inhibition of eicosanoid generating enzymes or the modulation of the production of proinflammatory molecules.”  Thus, consuming more cucumbers could help protect us from various inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.
